Top 3 Eco-Friendly Printers

Earth-friendly advocacies started with recycled papers and then branched out to ecycled or remanufactured printer cartridges. Now the trend has moved a notch higher as printer manufacturers introduce eco-friendly printers to the market. Yes, you’ve read it right: printers have now also gone green in an effort to cope with the different corporate social responsibility and green campaigns in businesses.

Toner for Earth compiles a shortlist of three of the most popular eco-friendly printer models in the market today. Our criteria for choosing these printer models for this feature include other user reviews, printer specifications and if these printer models are also friendly on the pocket or not.

Topping our list is the HP DeskJet D2545. This eco-friendly desktop printer is perfect for small offices or personal use. According to HP, 83% of the printer case and body is made from recycled plastic. The black printer ink cartridges are made from 75% recycled plastic. It is also an Energy Star-certified printer which means that the HP DekJet D2545 consumes 40% less electricity when in sleep or idle mode. The HP DeskJet D2545 can print in both black and white or full color. It also has high resolutions of as much as 1200 dpi. The printer is capable of printing sizes ranging from 4 x 6 to 11x17. In terms of photos, it can print in standard 4 x 6 size to panoramic photos. The HP DeskJet D2545 is not only environment-friendly, it is also light on the pocket as it retails for only $44.99.

The second eco-friendly printer on our list is the Epson Stylus Office TX510FN. Although this model has yet to be launched formally, it has already created a buzz. According to Epson, the TX510FN will be the most eco-friendly printer model in the market. For one, 87% of its case/body and components can be recycled. It is also a certified power-saver as it only consumes about 0.25 watts of power when on standby mode. The TX510FN also prints fast, as much as 38 pages per minute with 5760 x 1440 dpi. This model is a bit more expensive as compared to its competitors, retailing for about $180.00 but the price is worth it since it comes with a 1200 x 2400 dpi scanner and a 30-page feeder. For its price and features, the TX510FN is also a multifunctional printer because it comes with a built-in color fax, Ethernet port and LED display.

Rounding up our list is the Canon PIXMA series. This series has several eco-friendly printer models known for their special features like the automatic two-sided printing which allows users to save as much as 50% of their paper supply. In particular, the MP980 model comes with white LED technology that allows the printer to consume less energy and to have zero warm-up time. Hence, it can save as much as 91% of overall energy as compared to the other printer models in the market today. The new packaging makes the MP980 22% smaller than its predecessor and is 18% more shipping-efficient. PIXMA printers are also Energy Star-qualified so they automatically go to a low-power mode when not in use. As if these features are not yet enough, there are other special functions and features that set the PIXMA series apart from other printer brands such as negative scanning, duplex scanning, has a gray ink cartridge for black and white printing, and good print resolution of 600 x 600 dpi for black and 9600 x 2400 dpi for color. Canon PIXMA printers come with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as a large 3.5” LCD display. Most of the Canon printer models have rechargeable ink cartridges that users can send back to the manufacturer for recycling. They also offer bigger savings since they have a single cartridge in which the individual tanks contain different color inks. The MP980 sells for $280.00.

Fonts: An Unlikely Ally for Green Printing

Apart from buying and using remanufactured or recycled ink and toner cartridges, more and more suggestions are now popping up on how you can strengthen green printing campaigns. Who would have thought that your choice of fonts can contribute to green printing? Read on as we discuss on the formatting of fonts on your documents and other files for printing. Yes, things as simple as the fonts that you use can either contribute or "sabotage' green printing.

Formatting the fonts on the files that you need to print can save not only trees but also on other resources like ink or toner and energy.

Choosing or using the right font type and size can allow you to maximize the amount of characters in a page which, in turn, reduces the amount of pages that you have to print. It will also be worth to note that you should select a font that is not very wide so it won't consume more spaces on the page. For example, the Courier type of font has wide letters so that each word typed will occupy bigger spaces on the page. Try Arial Narrow to see the difference, narrower font types can help increase the amount of words per page.

As much as possible, avoid typing with boldface fonts because this does not only consume more ink or toner but it also takes up more spaces on the page.

In this way, you do not only save on paper but also on your ink or toner as well as on other resources like time and electricity. This also makes printing faster. So the next time you feel the need to print and the document still has to be encoded, type it in 12-point Times New Roman. Once you’re finish encoding, highlight all the text then change the font size or the font type until you find something smaller and readable.

Experimenting or browsing through the different types and sizes of fonts is not only fun and creative, it also encourages responsible green printing.

Green Printing is In

Green printing is the considered by many as the best way to print nowadays. Although it is true that companies and individuals have promises and efforts to make the corporate world paperless, the use of paper or the printing of documents is inevitable especially in businesses. But you should not let this "need' render your efforts to save Mother Earth go futile. There are other options to this and there are many reasons why we should "go green".

1. Save Our Resources - Today's technological and industrial advancements would have depleted our resources so we should take care to preserve it so we still have some to use in the future. Using remanufactured toner cartridges contributes to this by decreasing the volume requirement for virgin materials.

2. Reduce carbon footprint - Patronizing OEM or new cartridges can contribute to more carbon emissions since printer manufacturers will keep on producing them. Apart from the need for more virgin materials, the process of producing ink and toner cartridges emits carbon dioxide. Use remanufactured cartridges instead to help decrease the carbon footprint since this does not require the production of new cartridges.

3. Reduce the use of fossil fuels - Manufacturing ink and toner cartridges utilizes fossil fuel to make the equipment run. If you use remanufactured ink and toner cartridges, production of new cartridges decreases so you get companies can save on fossil fuels.

Online Shopping for Toner Cartridge

To make the yuletide season extra special, people find ways to give gifts that are unique, special and from the heart. For one, they create and print their own Christmas cards. But imagine when you have can't print these cards because your printer ran out of toner. With holiday rush, how are you gonna go out and buy a replacement ink or toner cartridge? The answer: you don't have to go out. You can just turn on your computer and go online shopping!

The beauty of shopping for inks and toners online is it allows you to buy your supplies without leaving your house. Aside from this, buying toner or ink cartridges (whether OEM, compatible or remanufactured) is cheaper in online stores.

There are a few things to consider before you make an online purchase.

  • Check or verify company information – Technically, you should go for a company that’s into selling ink and toner cartridges online for several years. The longer they are in the service, the better. You should look for companies that have more than two years experience in online selling to ensure smooth transactions. It is also better if the website carries a complete address and contact details. A street address is better than a P.O. Box address. The company should preferably have a toll-free number or a customer service hotline that is available 24/7. Lastly, the printer manufacturer or seller should also have a legitimate email address so you can contact them easily, anytime and anywhere.
  • Good website information – Online companies should have a good and user-friendly websites. Customers should be able to understand all information posted and should be able to easily navigate through the site. Good online companies provide information on their websites including a glossary of terms that explains all the details about the ink and toner cartridges that they are selling; FAQ which answers the common inquiries that the company receives from its customers; company refund policy which explains how the customer can request for a refund (complete information along with time period and validity of refund); and company exchange policy which explains how the customer can request for exchange (if necessary).
  • User-friendly product catalog or easy-to-use product selection – Customers should be able to navigate through the site and find the ink or toner cartridge that they need easily. This should take only a few minutes.
  • Updated prices – One of the reasons why you opted for online shopping is because you want to save yourself from the hazards and expenses you would encounter when you go to a physical store. Online printer supplies stores should state their prices clearly and plainly. Indicate if the posted price is valid and up-to-date and if it already includes shipping costs and other fees. In general, online stores offer cheaper ink and toner cartridges so you’ll definitely pay less than when you go and buy from a store.
  • Money back guarantee – Online companies that sell ink and toner cartridges should offer an unconditional money back guarantee. This means that you can always get in touch with the company if you are not satisfied with their product and arrange for a refund or exchange.
  • Shipping information – Customers should verify the shipping information of the online store first before making the purchase. Check if the company offers free shipping. If not, clarify the shipping cost, lead time and courier.
  • Secure server – Always verify if the online store has a secure server to ensure that your personal information will remain private. This also makes payment easier and faster.
  • Privacy policy – When making purchases, customers have to enter their personal details. A company’s privacy policy ensures that they will not give your information to other companies and that you will not receive junk mails or spams.
  • Order tracking – Online stores provide an order tracking function that allows customers to see the location and status of their purchase. In some cases, the online store gives customer the tracking number so they can track it through the shipping company.

Following these tips will certainly make your purchase transactions smooth and stress-free. This also ensures that you get the best warranty, service and products in the market at cheaper costs (of course).

How to Maximize ROI in One Simple Way

As 2009 comes to a close, businesses are now preparing not only for the tax season but also for the 2010 business plans. Along with these, management teams also have to come up with their budget allocation for the whole year. A portion of the budget allocation is for the printer supplies. Although more and more companies are now going green, paperwork and printouts are still very much a part of daily office work.

Toner for Earth understands your business needs. We are giving you an option to cut down your expenses while, at the same time, promote your “go green” campaign. What is this option? Use compatible or remanufactured toners and cartridges on your office printers. We promise to give you your money’s worth. The savings are really excellent, not to mention your valuable contribution to your corporate social responsibility of helping save the environment.

Who knows? You may be spending too much on your printer supplies. As businesspeople, we know that you are familiar with the various models and strategies that businesses do to maximize their ROI. Printer manufacturers, for one, make use of the “user-based model”. This means that they are willing to sell their printer products at lower prices (even lower than the actually costs) since they can make more money from selling OEM toners and inks.

Just to give you an idea on how much your business can save from using compatible or remanufactured toners and inks, let us consider the following:

Table 1: Sample Cost Analysis

Printer Model: HP Color LaserJet CP4005n (CB503A)

Unit Price: $ 1,099.00

*Cost per Year is calculated assuming that your office replaces black toner cartridges every two months.

**Since the remanufactured toner has more standard page yield, it is assumed that it can last more than 2 months.

Based on this, you can see that your business can maximize its ROI by getting more savings from using compatible or remanufactured toners and inks. If you opt to purchase OEM toners, a whole year’s supply or consumption is already almost equivalent to the price of a new printer unit.

Premium toner allows you to cut your expenses by more than half with hardly any difference on the print quality and page yield. Users who have tried premium compatible or remanufactured toners and inks attest that they did not encounter any problems in installing and even in the outputs of premium toners and inks.

Using remanufactured toners and inks give you the highest savings. There are no issues or problems with remanufactured toners and inks especially if they are manufactured by reliable third-party manufacturers. There may be some differences in terms of print quality but this is hardly noticeable.

Apart from the savings, using compatible or remanufactured toners and inks can help save empty or used cartridges from being discarded into landfills. Keep in mind that it takes an average of 450 million years before these cartridges can decompose. So avoid consuming new or OEM cartridges faster than the landfills can decompose them if you want a clean environment.

Types of Recycled Toners

Recycled toners have different types. There are three types of recycled toners:

1. Premium Compatible Toner

This is the highest grade of recycled toners. It is called “premium” because the toner cartridge has been used only once. The manufacturer has also replaced all critical parts, up to 80% of its parts are replaced. The most commonly-replaced parts are the drum, wiper blades, seals and rollers. A premium recycled toner’s hopper is filled with electronically measured premium toner. After filling it with toner, the cartridge is then sealed and sent for shipment and selling.

Premium-grade toners are manufactured in ISO-certified manufacturing plants so you are assured that the quality assurance measures are at par. A percentage of each batch is tested before releasing them for shipping or selling. All premium toner cartridges are guaranteed to meet or even exceed the specifications of new OEM cartridges. They also compete well with their OEM counterparts especially in terms of print quality, longevity and consistency.

The expected failure rate for premium recycled toners is less than 1 % since these are almost the same as new OEM cartridges.

2. Value Recycled Toner

This type of toner is usually sold by re-sellers. Manufacturers would open up the original toner hoppers, clean and refill it with toner. The other parts are also cleaned and only those which are still good enough for re-use are reused. Impaired or malfunctioning components of the cartridge are replaced.

Reliable manufacturers can give you clean and non-leaking value recycled toners but still consumers are warned to check on the credibility of the manufacturers first before making a purchase because this might leak if the cartridge is not re-assembled. Expected failure rate for value recycled toner is between 3% to 5%.

3. Remanufactured Toners

Remanufactured toners are also referred to as “drill and fill” because crude methods of remanufacturing toners involve the drilling of a hole in a used empty toner cartridge hopper. It is then patched or covered after refilling it with toner.

Remanufactured toners are a whole lot cheaper.

Recession Gives Remans More Market Shares

Printer manufacturers were also affected by the recession. Sales of OEM cartridges have gone down for this year as compared to the previous year. The reason? Consumers are now trying to get their money's worth by going for cheaper alternatives like ink refills, compatible toners and remanufactured toners.

In a research conducted by IDC, a research firm, the sales of official OEM laser toner consumables have gone down by 24.9%. This is for the first half of 2009 only. Ink cartridge sales also went down by 19.2%.

If you think that the sales of OEM cartridges may be due to people opting not to print in order to save money on electricity and other resources, think again. The consumers have not changed their ways or habits. Instead, it appears that they have learned something from the recession. It has prompted consumers to go for cheaper alternatives like compatible and remanufactured toners and inks. In fact, the market for compatible inks, ink refills and remanufactured cartridges have demonstrated a steady increase. Sales in this sector have gone up by 5.1% over the same time period. This means that refills, compatibles and remans now have a 37.3% market share, up from 29.6 % in 2008.

Most of the growth in cheaper cartridge alternatives are seen In Russia, Ukraine and other countries that are heavily-dominated by refills and remans. In the U.S. and U.K., more consumers are also now patronizing compatible and reman printer supplies. Because of this, analysts fear that this continuing trend may make the impacts on OEM’s supplies revenues more aggravating.

The Truth Behind Ink and Toner Recycling

The following are some facts and figures about ink and toner recycling from the Cartridge World website:

• In the United States, approximately 8 cartridges are thrown away per second. Further calculation reveals that around 691,200 cartridges are being discarded per day. This data is alarming because we are talking about the United States only. Can you imagine how many cartridges are being thrown away per day in all countries?

• In North America, over 350 million cartridges are thrown into landfills annually. This volume apparently increases by an average of 12% per year.

• It takes about 450 to more than 1,000 years for these cartridges to decompose in landfills.

• About a gallon of oil is used to produce a new laser toner cartridge while two pints of oil are consumed to produce a new toner cartridge shell.

• As much as 70% of used printer cartridges in the world are thrown out and only 20% of these used cartridges are recycled for reuse.

• In a year, if all the discarded cartridges are stacked end to end, they will be able to circle the earth not only once but three times.

These are the facts. So now you see we have to consider using recycled or remanufactured printer toners and inks.

Always remember that for every ink cartridge recycled and reused is one less cartridge thrown into the landfills. If the whole population in the United States would use at least remanufactured toner or ink, this saves 308,134,115 cartridges from the landfills.

At the rate by which discarded cartridges decompose in the landfills, it is evident that people around the globe can consume a whole lot more than the landfills can decompose. To avoid contributing to this, use remanufactured toner and ink cartridges. Each remanufactured ink cartridge saves about 1.59 kilos of solid waste from being added in landfills. It also helps in reducing pollution.

Not All Returned Cartridges are Reused

Some companies or individuals go on the extra mile to return empty ink and toner cartridges to manufacturers like HP, Lexmark and others so that these manufacturers can recycle and reuse the empty cartridge.

However, not all returned cartridges are being reused especially in original makers manufacturing plants. Only about 20% of empty cartridges are recovered and independent or third-party remanufacturers tend to recover more empty cartridges than all of the original manufacturers combined.

Some original printer toner makers like HP and Canon take in used toner cartridges. They grind these cartridges into polymeric powders that are then formed into pellets. These pellets will be used in producing low-grade plastic products like CD cases and cups.

I have noticed how some companies would return their used cartridges back to the original manufacturers and then order new branded cartridges again. Do you think this is helpful to the environment or not? For me, it’s just like a cycle in which you recycle what you use or purchase. It would have been better if companies would return empty cartridges and then order compatible or remanufactured cartridges instead of new ones. This is more environment-friendly since you will not require companies to produce new or virgin cartridges. Plus, your company gets to save more money since remanufactured toner cartridges cost less than new or branded cartridges.

There is hardly any difference on the print quality between new cartridges and remanufactured toner cartridges. In fact, government, major companies and independent testing laboratories certify that remanufactured toner cartridges can perform as well as even better than new cartridges (provided that the remanufactured cartridges are produced properly).

If you want, you can just try out one or two remanufactured toner cartridge first and see for yourself if there’s any difference between using it and using new cartridges. Contact Toner for Earth for your remanufactured toner cartridge needs.

How to Dispose or Make Use of Old Printers

With the way printer manufacturers upgrade their products nowadays, you can easily find yourself drowning in a sea of outdated printers. However, Toner for Earth discourages you from just throwing your old printer/s away. Simply doing that is not environment-friendly.

There are several alternatives on how you can dispose or make use of your old printer.

If you are dead set on throwing the old printer away, make sure that the ink or toner cartridge is removed. This may leak and cause a lot of harm and poison to the environment since it contains toxic materials.

In most communities, garbage pick-up or collection is scheduled so make sure that you take your old printer out only on the day and time scheduled. Some computer stores offer proper disposal stations for electronic devices. You can take them there. If you’re lucky enough, you might run to one of those stores that offer trade-in deals. This means that you can still get some salvage value from your old printer by trading it in and then adding some cash for the upgraded unit.

Just throwing the old printer away is the least environment-friendly measure that you can do, so try to consider the other options first.

When you have time (and your old printer is still functional), you may scout around your area for some organizations or places that take used printers as donations. Some of these organizations or places include schools, shelters and non-profit organizations. There is always the option to sell your old functional printer to a second-hand store, thrift shop or flea market. In this way, you are still able to get a part of your money back from the old printer. Another suggestion will be to sell or donate your old printer to shops that specialize in refurbishing old computers and equipment.

Supposing that you are unable to find any of these places, you can always post an online ad on sites like Freecycle or Craiglist which offer free listing for good that you want to sell. In this way, other people can buy your old printer and still put it to good use.

Lastly, some of the more creative and innovative individuals can think of other ways to re-design and “re-purpose” old printers. This will allow you to make good use of some of the printer parts even if the whole unit is no longer functional. For example, you may empty the contents of the old printer and use the shell as container for trinkets, papers, art supplies and others.

In disassembling the printer parts, you may also sell each printer component separately in junkyards or refurbishing shops. You may also have each part checked if it’s still working or not. You may want to keep the parts that are still in good condition as spare especially if your new printer carries the same brand or model series.

The Environmental Benefits of Recycled Printer Toners

Toner for Earth gives you some of the environmental benefits of using remanufactured or recycled toner cartridges.

  • 97% Recyclable – A typical used toner cartridge is about 3 pounds heavy. It is consist of 40% polymer (or plastic), 40% metal and smaller percentages of rubber, paper, foam and toner materials. The polymeric component is derived from engineering-grade plastic which requires at least 1,000 years to decompose. The good news here is 97% of these combined material components can be recycled and re-use. This is exactly what Toner for Earth is doing, giving you remanufactured toner cartridges in return.
  • Conservation of resources – Of course, the use of remanufactured toner cartridges can help reduce pollution and wastes. It also minimizes the volume of plastic, steel, aluminum, rubber and other non-biodegradable materials from being disposed in landfills. Using remanufactured toner cartridges helps in the conservation of natural resources by minimizing the need for virgin materials that are used for new cartridges. For every remanufactured toner cartridge, approximately 5 to 9 pounds of virgin materials are conserved.
  • Energy-Saver – Unknown to many, the use of remanufactured toner cartridges in printers and copiers also saves energy. Sources show that about 3 quarts of oil are burned during the production of a single new cartridge. A used toner cartridge can be remanufactured up to four times, depending on the type and condition. As such, a remanufactured toner cartridge can save as much as 12 quarts of oil.
There are a whole lot of other benefits that you can get from using remanufactured or recycled toner cartridges.

Go Green Campaigns: The New Trend among Companies

With all the environmental backlashes around the globe, more and more companies are now “going green”. For those who are still not aware of it, the term “going green” refers to becoming environment-friendly.

Most offices have already implemented their own “go green campaigns”. The most common corporate green campaigns involve the reduction of office stationery to decrease the volume of paper wasted by offices. Employees are encouraged not to print emails and other documents unless these are extremely necessary. Another is the implementation of energy conservation measures.

Since most of the go green campaigns in offices involve reduction in the use and supply of papers, does this mean that offices can survive without any paper? Or does this mean that offices that still use paper do not care about the environment? The answer, of course, is a resounding no. Papers are part of a day’s work. Offices can still be environment-friendly by using recycled materials. And by “recycled materials”, I am not only referring to recycled paper.

Printers are also as much a part of daily office works as papers are. This means that printer toners and cartridges are still required. The good news is offices can also be environment-friendly. Toner for Earth offers remanufactured cartridges, one way for offices to go green. The company employs only highly-skilled and certified technicians to ensure that our remanufactured cartridges are cleaned, re-assembled and tested for distribution.

To date, more than 3 million companies worldwide are using remanufactured cartridges for their printing needs. The print results do not differ from those of brand-new cartridges. They still give excellent print results. Aside from this, remanufactured cartridges matter because it can help prevent more than 300 million plastic printer cartridges from being dumped in landfills.

So for companies aiming to boost their corporate social responsibility, check out Toner for Earth and see what difference you can make.
