Liberia Utilizes Recent Innovations to Cut Down on Illegal Logging

Last month we covered the importance of recycling paper and why we should continue to do so. The bottom line is that like the Environmental Defense Fund states on their site, recycling paper "saves forests," and now, there's at least one more measure being used to prevent worldwide deforestation: bar codes.

While the technology from British company Helveta has been put into use as a way to minimize illegal logging since 2009, the West African country of Liberia has recently signed a deal with the European Union to regulate the country's logging industry, which the country relies on heavily to support its economy.

Human Motion Lights Up Subways

Potential energy sources are indeed just "under our noses". Kinetic energy, the energy stored in moving bodies or objects, is one perfect example. In fact, some of forms of renewable energy actually use kinetic energy to harness energy from other source. For example, wind turbines make use of kinetic energy to produce energy from the wind. It passes on the kinetic energy from the wind to the turbines to generate power. Some of the tidal and wave energy devices also utilize the kinetic energy of moving water to produce power.

But the mere mention of "kinetic energy" calls to mind human motion.

Google Goes Green

Google, the renowned search engine, joins the Go Green bandwagon. Google Inc. contributed to green energy through the development of a new type of mirror technology that can help reduce the cost of building solar thermal plants by as much as 50%.

Bill Weihl, Google's Green Energy Officer, has told Reuters about this latest development. If the pilot testing for the new solar energy mirror goes well, Google will proceed with its rollout in about one to three years. The company is currently coordinating with the developers of solar energy mirror in exploring materials that can be used as reflective surface and as substrate on which the mirror will be mounted. As of now, the developers were able to create an internal prototype.

When it Comes to Conserving Resources, Every Little Bit Counts

Did you know that it takes approximately three-and-a-half quarts to produce the plastic for a brand new OEM or compatible toner cartridge? According to StopWaste.org, a toner cartridge can be remanufactured up to four times, which means up to 14 quarts of oil can be saved by toner cartridge recycling and buying remanufactured toner cartridges.

If you’re serious about going green with your printing, consider the prediction of HSBC Senior Global Economist Karen Ward, who said in a recent CNBC article that even without increasing demand, we could have “as little as 49 years of oil left.”

Scary right? Think of how much less oil we might have if it weren’t for the advent of hybrid vehicles and other innovations designed to reduce our reliance on oil and other non-sustainable resources.

Common Misconceptions About Remanufactured Toner Cartridges

Since the introduction of remanufactured toner cartridges and compatible toner cartridges, competition became more stiff in the toner cartridge market. To save their business from declining sales, manufacturers of OEM cartridges allegedly started campaigns that destroyed the reputation of remanufactured and compatible toner cartridges in terms of providing high quality printouts. This is aggravated by the introduction of third party manufacturers that prioritize lower price instead of product quality. Then out of nowhere, misconceptions about remanufactured toner cartridges began plaguing the market. These wrong notions have negative impact on remanufactured toner cartridge sales and public patronage. A Sweet Approach to Making an LED Light

While the use of LED lights as indoor lighting fixtures isn’t as widespread as it might be in the near future, innovations in design and function are still moving full speed ahead. School of Art Institute Chicago student Won Joon Lee took an unconventional approach in the materials used to create his LED lamp, and it’s pretty sweet…literally.

Lee’s creation, the Stardust lamp, which integrates crystallized sugar into its design, made its debut at the 50th annual Milan Furniture Fair this past April. The lamp was the culmination of a two-semester project where the South Korean born Lee explored the potential uses of sugar in everyday design.

As part of the manufacturing process, Lee submerged LEDs into a concentrated sugar solution for 10 days, causing sugar to solidify around the diodes. The sugar encased diodes were then mounted onto an iron frame inspired resembling a sugar molecule.
Lee said the Stardust lamp is still in its developmental stages, so it might be a while before you can get your hands on one to replace your living room lighting fixture. But if you’re a business owner or someone who just likes to collect illuminated signs, LED technology is already available to you at the click of a mouse.

TonerGreen.com has a selection of LED fixtures that range from programmable business hour LED signs that you can display at your shop window, to a burrito LED sign that you can hang above your fridge. The possibilities are endless. We now also offer free shipping on all of our signs, which all come with a 1-year no-hassle warranty, so if you’re looking for a more energy efficient way to tell potential customers that your store’s open, make TonerGreen your first stop online and get a sweet deal on a brand new LED sign.
